How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump helps regulate temperature by moving hot air from one location to another. In one application, heat pumps can be used to extract warm air from the air around you, to help provide heating for a residential or commercial space. This operation can also be reversed, where a heat pump can also provide cooling, by transferring heat away from an environment where cooler temperatures are desired. In principle, all heat pumps operate similarly through heat transference. A specialized compressor circulates a refrigerant, cycling evaporation and condensation, allowing consistent temperature distribution.

Air conditioning systems run on a similar system to a heat pump in its operation for cooling room temperatures, whereby hot air is extracted from the inside and pushed out. Unlike air conditioning systems which are limited only to cooling, heat pumps can also provide heating in the winter months through extracting warm air from outdoors, even when the ground temperature outside reaches subzero temperatures.

Heat Pump Repair

One of the most common problems with heat pumps can be failures caused by a malfunctioning thermostat. It’s important to check to ensure that the thermostat is set to the desired temperature, wired properly and was installed by a certified professional. Other common problems include power supply problems, whereby the unit becomes disconnected from its power source, or a circuit breaker is tripped. If you’ve tried resolving this on your own with no success, please call us for prompt heat pump repair service.

Regular Maintenance

It’s important to perform regularly scheduled maintenance for your heat pump to prevent system breakdowns. Maintenance can include tests to your system’s thermostat settings, as well as inspection and/or replacement of air filters & belts. We will also perform inspections to your air ducts, electrical wiring compressor operation and other vital systems, preventing unnecessary and repairs and complete system replacements that can be costly.
